A Dialogue of Gifts, Memory, and Space
In June 2024, HEARTLAND opened its doors as a glowing red-orange art project, transforming the experimental venue KloHäuschen, a former public restroom at Munich’s Großmarkthalle, into a lively, audiovisual meeting point. Here, visitors were invited to explore and participate in a unique exchange inspired by the concept of the gift economy.
At the heart of the installation was active visitor engagement. Inspired by a welcoming introductory video, participants brought in special gifts, accompanied by personal stories, to be cast in precise sand molds and reproduced in wax. Through this process, intimate conversations about giving and receiving emerged, forming audio fragments that wove together a collective narrative of memory and connection.
The KloHäuschen itself became a central figure in this social sculpture. Hidden details and architectural features of the space were cast and recontextualized, creating a profound connection between the artist, the space, and its visitors. Step by step, the space filled with molds, mementos, drawings, and audiovisual elements, making the KloHäuschen a tangible site of exchange, intimacy, and shared experiences. A philosophical discussion and a sung gift performance completed this immersive exploration.
